How to Raise Children who have Good Morals

(568 Words)
Most parents want children with sound morals. The earlier these lessons are taught, the more likely it is that your child will learn to include good morals in his or her life. Try a variety of techniques to help them incorporate these traits into their lives.
Showcase good morals of your own
Children learn by example. If you tell them to practice good morals but then cheat, steal and lie, then your children are more likely to pay attention to your behaviors. Show that you do what is fair and that you act towards others as you wish others to act upon you. Tell them about your decisions and why you have made them.
You can also practice activities that showcase good morals with your children. For instance, you can do charity work together. You can make the decision to sacrifice something for someone else such as helping someone even when you want to do something fun like watch a movie.
Introduce religion into your child’s life
Religion can provide examples for moral behavior and teach children about the importance of making fair and just decisions. Children who are religious may have high ideals. They may help others within their church, temple or other religious organization. They may feel accountable to a higher power and want to practice good behavior so that they can achieve the ideals religious organizations showcase.
Surround your children with others with good morals
It is not uncommon to hear about someone with questionable morals later blaming everything on “the crowd.” Children take cues not only from their parents but from other people with whom they associate. Make sure that your children are with others who practice good morals. This includes both family members and friends. Make it your business to meet their friends. If someone has a bad influence, decide whether the association should continue (obviously your power will depend on the age of the child and how he or she associates with the friend).
Read stories about morals
Stories can teach even young children about important morals. Some even specifically have a moral printed at the end for children to learn. Look for books that incorporate this. Television programs such as Barney the Dinosaur and Dora the Explorer will also often teach important values.
Reward behavior associated with good morals
When children show good morals such as when they decide not to drink alcohol even though their friends are doing so, then you want to reward them. Even praise can be very powerful. Show that you notice when they make the tough choices to do what is right.
Correct behavior that shows lapses in judgment
No one is perfect. Your child will make mistakes like everyone else. How you deal with it can help pave their behavior for the future. Notice and respond to their behavior in a consistent and timely matter. Do not just discipline them for doing wrong but show them how to do right.
Having good morals can help a child make positive choices as they grow into adulthood. Parents should try not just one but a variety of techniques to instill these lessons in their children. In addition to all of the techniques above, good morals should be a topic of discussion in your home. Spend time with your children to make sure that they feel happy, safe and secure, and they will hopefully grow with good morals.
