Even though your child is in high school, you still may need to deal with his her teachers. Different methods can help you communicate effectively with these instructors.
Carefully choose the time to talk to him or her
High school teachers are very busy. If you speak to him or her right before class is about to begin, they are not likely to have time for you. Most will make an appointment, however. Do not hound him or her with phone call after phone call or e-mail after e-mail.
Develop a good relationship
You may have a better time communicating with your high school child’s teachers if you can develop a relationship. It may be just about introducing yourself. If they need a volunteer or a chaperone, then you can offer your time. A little bit of work on your part can go a long way if something arises. You should also keep abreast of how your child is doing. Go to them with any issues on a timely basis.
Let your child handle what he or she can
When your child was in elementary school you may have been accustomed to handling everything for him or her. Your child is now a breath away from college, and he or she will need to start dealing with issues on their own. Many high school teachers become frustrated when parents do what the children should do. Do not expect the teacher to excuse something your child did wrong or give him or a second chance just because Mommy and Daddy called. Be reasonable in what you expect from the teacher. Teachers do not like when parents go above their authority. They can get into trouble if you go to the principal, for instance. Unfortunately they may take out their frustrations on your child. Obviously there are times when you have no choice if the teacher is being truly unreasonable. You should try everything that you can with the teacher first to resolve any issues.
