Budget Tips for Newlyweds
(523 Words)
Once the final wedding and honeymoon bills come in, newlyweds may be searching for any way they can to save money. There are many ways that they can do so. Heed the following budget tips.
Save money on groceries
Now that you are married and together, your whole food bill should be far less than the sum of its once individual parts. You should not need to buy two loaves of bread at a time, for instance. Look for ways to combine to save. If one prefers one item while another prefers another (i.e. two different types of bread) then perhaps you can compromise on one you both like or alternate. You may be able to buy food products in larger packages then before since there are two of you, which can also save you money on the per unit cost. You can extrapolate this to other purchase such as paper goods.
Eat in
Many newlyweds like to go out to eat, but this can be very expensive. Eat in more than eating out. You can still make delicious meals with a few great cookbooks. If you do go out to eat look for deals such as early birds, coupon specials or a deal with several meals and an appetizer or dessert for one price.
You can also save on lunch while at work. Instead of going out to eat or buying television dinners, take leftovers from the meal the night before.
Consider one car
Many newlyweds start out with two cars. Evaluate whether you truly need two cars now that you are married and in all likelihood living together. The cost of an automobile is extremely expensive, encompassing far more than just the sticker price. You need to pay for insurance, gasoline, maintenance and more. Even if you do choose to keep two cars, try to use only one as much as possible to save on these items. Carpool with each other and others and use cheaper (and greener) alternatives such as bicycling and walking.
Save money on electricity
There are many ways that newlyweds can save on electricity. Combine laundry loads so that they are full. Only keep the lights on in the room you are in. Buy more energy efficient appliances.
Save money on entertainment
Many newlyweds want to go out and enjoy life, especially if they are not ready for children yet. You can save money by looking for free or low cost excursions. Go to a park and on a nice walk together. If you live near the beach, then make a romantic picnic under the stars. Take in local community theaters rather than expensive big productions. Spend quality time together doing game nights and in-home movie nights.
Make a budget and stick to it
Each person should be aware of the financial situation and purchases. Try to avoid impulse buying. Make a budget and plan how to spend your money. Make sure both parties agree. The budget will not work if you do not stick to it.
