Internships how to get your Foot in the Door
(465 Words)
An internship can go a long way in advancing your career. For some it will give them the experience that can get them a new or better job, and others may actually get a job at the place where they have the internship. It can be quite difficult to get a good internship, however, as the competition can be quite stiff. The following are some tips for getting your foot in the door.
Inquire about any opportunities your school may be aware of
If you are in school, or even if you have already graduated, you should look to your school. Many of the firms that are looking for interns will share the opportunities with the schools so that they can then disseminate the information. Your school may be able to give you an edge in getting the position, and may be able to tell you how to apply and with whom to follow-up. They also may have information about the likelihood that you will get certain internships with certain firms.
Network
The saying “It’s not what you know, but who you know,” does have some truth in reality. You should network around, asking friends, colleagues and acquaintances in the legal field if they know of any opportunities that may be available. You may be able to get in from the inside if someone knows of a position or even if someone knows someone who knows someone and so forth. Do not be shy to ask people because the worst that they can do is say that they do not know of any opportunities, but it only takes one to be that perfect opportunity that can make your career.
Get a great resume
A resume is often the first impression you will give any company to whom you are applying. You will want to make sure that you have a great resume. Two people with the same experience and qualifications can portray far different images depending on the resume. Oftentimes, schools will provide counseling in this. It may be worthwhile to pay a professional to help you spruce up your resume. This can cost several hundred dollars but if it gets you the internship, then it will be worth it.
Call to different companies.
Being proactive can help you get a good internship. You can call around to different firms. A firm might have an opportunity that they haven’t posted yet or they may not post somewhere that you would know to look. Sometimes firms that don’t have anything now will still take your resume and keep it on file so that if something does turn up, you will already have a chance.
With hard work and dedication you can get a great internship. Try the above strategies to see what would work for you.
