Why a Seasonal Job may not help your Career

(410 Words)
A seasonal job may not be helpful to your career. There are many different factors that can influence this.
Short duration
Many employers are interested in jobs in which you have spent some time. Some employers are looking for at least a year in a field but many want five or more years of experience. A job that is lasting for just a few months obviously falls way short of that obviously. Even if it is in the same field, they may feel like you simply did not have the opportunity to learn enough in such a short span and may be looking for people with more experience.
It is often easier to get these jobs
Sometimes employers are impressed by the fact that you were able to get a certain position. They may want you because they felt that someone else thought enough of you to hire you. Many companies need a lot of employees during the holiday season. It may be far easier to get one of these jobs than to get a regular job. Potential employers may not be as impressed by you having scored such a job because they may feel like it was a lot easier to get.
Working during a seasonal job is often different than working at a regular job
Potential employers may not feel like you got a true experience at working the position when you are in a seasonal job. The entire environment can be very different at that time. The shops are busier and there are many other differences. An employer may want someone who has experience during a different time of year.
Many of the seasonal job are lower paying or less challenging
A lot of seasonal jobs are in retail. They may not be particularly highly paying. They may not be as professional. If you are looking to further a professional career, then they may not be the right move for you.
You will miss out on the opportunity for other positions
There may be other positions that can be more helpful to further your career. If you take a seasonal job, then you will not be in one of those. It will be more difficult to look for a job if you are already in one.
Seasonal jobs are good in many ways, but they may not necessarily help to further your career. The above factors are just a few reasons why this may be the case.
