The Impact of Mothers on Family Stability
(430 Words)
Mothers play an important part in family stability. Each and every decision that they make affects the family as a whole, including the children. With greater understanding of their impact, mothers can make the best decisions when caring for their children.
According to Claire Kamp Dush, author of a study on family stability and assistant professor of human development and family science at Ohio State University, the success of a child is impacted greatly by the stability of the family. The presence of the mother on a regular basis plays a large part. If the mother provides only a partial presence in the children’s lives, then this can have a detrimental effect on the kids. The study looked at academic achievement and behavioral issues. Families that were stable with one or two parents performed better.
The behavior of mothers play a large role in how stable the family is. If the mother is suffering from her own problems such as a mental illness, financial problems, or drug problems, then she may not be able to provide for the family in a stable way. She may not parent in an effective way. The children may be left to their own devices and not encounter effective discipline.
It can be very challenging for children when their mothers do not provide a stable presence. Longing for her attention, they may act out. This can manifest itself in behavioral problems in school or at the home. Also, if they watch the mother behave in an inconsistent way, then they may start to take on some of those destructive behaviors.
Even small decisions by a mother can have an impact on family stability. For instance, if a mother makes unwise financial decisions then the family may run into financial problems. The parents may be stressed over money and may not be able to purchase the essentials for the family. They may not be able to stay in a safe home.
If the mother is not in a stable relationship, then it can affect the stability of the family as well. It can be difficult for children to watch men come in and out of their mothers’ lives. Mothers who are dating should be careful on to what to expose their children so that their children do not get accustomed to something that will not last. They should consider what they say in front of their children as well.
Every mother impacts the stability of her family in large and small ways. Her presence and decisions should be carefully measured for the good of the family.
