(413 Words)
You can teach much through the magic of storytelling. With eloquent words and emphatic gestures you can explore many subjects, among them the topic of tolerance. This is an important lesson for kids to learn, and can be imparted in the following ways.
You will have your choice for the main character when teaching a lesson about tolerance. You can have the main character be a member of the majority, who is unaccustomed to others who are different. You could also have the main character be different themselves. You can also tell the story from the point of view of these two characters, who might seem so different on the outside, but who are very much the same on the inside. You can talk about their thoughts and how they may think the same things even if they look different, come from different cultures, have different backgrounds, etc. You can talk about how they are wary of each other because of the differences.
You can then have the children interact with each other in the story. You can talk about how each is surprised at how many similarities they have. For instance, they may both like to play sports even if the actual sport is completely different. They may both like airplanes. You can show that they learn about each other and are excited to learn about how everyone is different, and yet everyone is valuable.
You can also introduce other characters who are different as well. You can discuss a character with a physical handicap, for instance. You can show the characters displaying the correct behavior towards others. The story can show them working together overcoming a challenge.
One idea is to set the story on a sports team. Many kids like sports and might be able to relate to this. You can show how everyone brings something different to the team. You can then show that by working together they can succeed. In the end, they can realize that difference are something to be celebrated, not something of which to be afraid or wary.
You can also have a character who is at first worried about the differences but then learns his or her lesson of tolerance through the story.
Tolerance is an important lesson to teach to children. Storytelling is an excellent way to share this with them in a way that they will both understand and enjoy. Make sure to gear the tale towards the age of the children.
