Plan your route carefully
There will be a lot of people on the road during this weekend, especially at the peak times. You want to be sure to think about the route you should take. Sometimes the shortest route is not the fastest depending on the traffic.
Give yourself a lot of time
Many people travel via the road for the Thanksgiving holidays. You may be slowed up by a variety of obstacles including bad weather, traffic jams, construction, drivers unfamiliar with the roads or fumbling for maps, accidents and more. A trip that is normally very quick can be much longer. If you are leaving to be there for Thanksgiving dinner, you will want to be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get there. You can literally lose hours with a combination of the aforementioned factors.
Make hotel reservations early
If you will be stopping at a hotel during your Thanksgiving road trip, then make these reservations early. Hotels fill up much faster during this time.
Drive carefully
You will have many people making long distance road trips for Thanksgiving. When some people drive on roads they are not familiar with, they may make some mistakes such as merging too quickly because they did not realize a lane was about to end. Others might drive slower than normal. Try to be very defensive in your driving. Remember that you want to have safe holiday above all.
Enjoy the holiday
You should enjoy your Thanksgiving journey. During this time of year, many of the leaves are turning fiery colors. Look at the beautiful views outside your car window and be amazed. You can also talk about meaningful things as you are traveling with your family such as the meaning of Thanksgiving and what each of you are thankful for. You can play games in the car as well.
General road travel tips
There are many general tips for traveling the roadways that you should adhere to during your Thanksgiving trip. Make sure that you avoid distractions while driving. Although you may want to talk to and text someone during this time of year, you might want to wait until you have stopped or someone else is driving. Also, bring lots of food and drinks for the family. Bring activities for your children such as activity books or a DVD player.
A Thanksgiving road trip can be an adventure to remember throughout the years. Consider the above tips to make this a wonderful time.
