There are many art projects that students can use with recycled materials Not only does this send a great message, but it can allow the children to use their creativity. Consider the following ideas.
Jar art projects
There are many different art projects that a student can do with a jar from a food items such as tomato sauce or applesauce. First make sure that the label is fully removed. The jars should be cleaned and sanitized. The jar can then be made to hold other items like beads or hair clips. The children can get some paint that is specifically made for glass and paint different images on it. They can draw in flowers, rainbows, trains or whatever they like. They can draw what they going to be storing in there such as buttons if that is what they are going to use it for. They can also turn a jar into a vase. Again, they can decorate it however they want, although a floral scene might be especially appropriate.
Plastic bottle art projects
It is great to rescue plastic from the landfills. The children can use it to make a ship in a bottle art project. They can do this with a large bottle such as from a two liter soda bottle or just from a small plastic bottle. First they can very neatly cut off the bottom end of the bottle and then put it to the side. The children then need to make a ship. They can make it from wood or fabric or they can just draw it out on cardboard. They can then put it into the bottle amongst blue beads, tissue paper or something else to represent the sea. They can then reattach the back of the bottle with tape and cover that part with sticklers or something so it is not obvious that it was removed. Their family will be amazed!
Milk Carton art project
If the children have some milk cartons, then they might be able to turn them into a little planter for a plant. They can cover them in construction paper and then decorate them as they would like. They can poke holes in the bottom if they want water to be able to escape. They can then fill it with dirt and a pretty plant.
Egg carton art project
The students can take the “bumpy” bottom of an egg carton and (after cleaning it) make it into a caterpillar. They can take pipe cleaners and stick it through the bottom to be the legs. They can use paint to decorate it.
There are many great art projects that can be made from recycled materials. The above are just a few that might work for your class.
