There are many ways to protect your small business from burglars. Of course, nothing is foolproof, but a few simple steps can go a long way in preventing a robbery. Consider the following tips.
Get an alarm
An alarm system can help prevent a burglary. There are many different systems that you can get. You can get a simple alarm system that just makes a loud siren, flashes lights and so forth. It may be set to go off when a door is opened, a window is broken or when motion is sensed in the business. Alternatively you can add a monitored system whereby a company will be notified when an alarm goes off and the police can be sent straight out. Most robbers want complete silence – they certainly do not want to be noticed and arrested. Suddenly lights are flashing and sirens are blaring and most will run away at this point. Also, they may not know if it is monitored or not so they may take no chances. One of the best deterrents is that little sign you put outside your door to say that your business is monitored by an alarm. A lot of would-be burglars will move on just at that.
Keep valuable items in a safe
In a lot of businesses such as a jewelry store, the wares are kept in safes overnight. This can provide a further layer of protection against burglars. There are many safes that are very strong and would take tools to break. These cost differing amounts of money so you can see what is necessary and what you can afford for your small business.
Consider surveillance cameras
Many burglars do not want to be watched. If you set up a surveillance system and put up a sign indicating such, then they might be more put off.
Get a security guard
A security guard can go a long way to protect a small business. Many burglars will search for a business without one. If the items are very valuable and you have the money to spend you can also often hire an off-duty cop. Some people may also get guard dogs.
The best way to make your small business burglar proof might be to combine the above methods for added layers of protection. For instance, you can have an alarm and a safe so that even if the burglar decides he will chance it and run in to grab what he can for a few minutes after the alarm sounds, he won’t be able to grab things that quickly. The more you do, the less chance you have of actually losing items.
