Disadvantages of Choosing an Anonymous Sperm Donor

When selecting a sperm donor, some people choose one that is known while others choose one that is anonymous. Each path has its own advantages and disadvantages. The following are some of the disadvantages of choosing an anonymous sperm donor.
You might not know or be able to choose the medical history of the anonymous sperm donor
The medical history of a biological parent can play a large role in the medical future of the child. Some people just have the tendency to have more diseases and conditions run in their family such as cancer, heart disease, etc. When you choose an anonymous sperm donor you might not know what this medical history is. It could be very bad. In addition, you might not even know what to be on the lookout for, so not only might the child’s chances of having a certain condition be higher but you might also lose out on the chance to do extra testing that someone with the family history might typically do to find out early.
You will not know the other characteristics of the anonymous sperm donor that might be passed down
Oftentimes there are characteristics of parents that are passed down to the children, regardless of whether the parent is raising them or not. They may have an anger management problem, for instance. They may have a lower intelligence. Perhaps you might not have chosen someone with these characteristics to be possibly passed down to your child. There is no way to know.
You can’t have the child reconnect with the anonymous sperm donor if you so choose
If the sperm donation is anonymous, then it would be far more difficult for you or the child to track down the father should you desire to have contact. The records might be confidential and they may even lose track of them themselves. When you have someone who you know then that option exists. They may not want you to contact them, of course, however you will have a way of doing so if something arises. This could also be helpful if there was some sort of medical problem such as cancer in which the child could accept something from the parent such as bone marrow.
Many people like the benefits of choosing an anonymous sperm donor but you should be aware of the drawbacks as well. The above reasons point out why you might want to consider a different option.
