Should you Wax
(454 Words)
Waxing is a very popular form of hair removal. It involves placing a wax solution on the hair that is to be removed, placing a strip of fabric on it (except for stripless versions) and then pulling it off, pulling the hair along with it. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this type of hair removal.
The amount of time that waxing keeps the hair off can be considered an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on what you are comparing it to. Waxing may keep the hair off for several weeks to a month. This is far longer than shaving, however some types of hair removal like electrolysis and laser hair removal can provide somewhat permanent results.
Waxing can give you a nice clean look as compared to shaving, where the results can start to wane later in the day. You can also target areas that would be difficult to address with shaving, such as under the eyebrows.
Waxing allows you to create a specific shape to your eyebrows. Compared to tweezing, the other way women do this, it is much quicker and less painful since you can do all the hairs at once.
One of the main problems with waxing is that it can be very painful. How much it hurts depends on the area that is being waxed; some areas like above the lips are much more sensitive than others. Whereas shaving does not typically involve any pain, this involves a lot. Of course it is no more pain that plucking hair by hair and it is similar to or less than the pain of electrolysis.
Another disadvantage of waxing is that it will irritate some people’s skin. You may find that your skin is red or otherwise irritated. The extent of this will depend on how sensitive your skin is. Some people will find it to be very irritating, whereas it will be less so for other people.
The cost of waxing is also both an advantage and a disadvantage, depending on what you are comparing it to. Most people get it done at a salon and you may pay $10 to $20 or more for a small area. If you get your legs or another large area done, then this can go for quite a bit more. It is much more expensive than shaving. If you buy a kit and do your own waxing, then it is much more reasonable, although still generally more if you are doing large areas like your legs. Laser hair removal and electrolysis tends to be much more, however.
Waxing is a good mode of hair removal for many people. Think about your hair removal needs to decide whether it makes sense for you.
