Beauty might be skin deep, however your physical appearance can affect your career. It can do so for both the bad and the good, and there are steps you can take to put your best face forward, so to speak. The following are ways in which physical appearance can affect your career.
It can make you more eligible for certain fields
There are certain fields in which physical appearance is very important. For instance, if you are looking to be a model, they will often be looking for certain characteristics. Obviously, you will need to be photogenic. Another field that often looks for more attractive people is acting. There are other fields where you might not always need to be attractive, but they may feel that it would be better and thus might consciously or unconsciously look for those who are more attractive.
Someone might think more of you or favor you
A lot of people are drawn to attractive people. They may feel that they favor them, and it might not even be a conscious thing. Those who are attractive sometimes get further. Someone might want to work with them and thus hire them or promote them. Someone might even think that they are better at something because they look good, but this is obviously not at all necessarily the case.
It is important to look neat and “put together”
No matter how physically attractive you are or aren’t, it is important to at least try your best to be presentable. People can tell when you make the effort to make your appearance nice. If you do not take the time to make yourself look at least presentable (i.e. if you have torn clothes or disheveled hair) then you might be putting out a vibe of either not caring enough about yourself to make yourself look presentable or just not being together at all. Your boss might wonder why you are not doing the simple things to take care of yourself. If you are dealing with customers or others, you might be representing the company. They will probably not want someone representing the company who looks like they cannot even take care of themselves. Therefore you should always take the time to make your appearance look the best it can be.
