Communication is key to a marriage. Most people will tell you this. Many times miscommunications can cause problems that grow as time passes. There are different ways that you can develop healthy communication in a marriage. The following are some tips to consider.
Make a rule that you discuss things that are bothering you
When something small happens, we might not discuss it with our spouse, even if it bothers us. This can be a mistake if that small thing bothers you and continues to do so as time passes.
Small things have a way of changing into large things if left to stew. Also, many small things can combine to build resentment and just general bad feelings. Therefore, it may be a good strategy to make a rule that you will discuss with your spouse issues that are bothering you, no matter how small.
Especially small items might be cleared up in a matter of moments, and then they will be no longer and not have the opportunity to grow larger or combine with other things to form a greater issue.
Make times to talk
One good way to have healthy communication is to make specific times that you can talk. Sometimes there may be issues that you are not purposely avoiding, but that you never just get the time to say. This can be avoided if you lay out specific times that you will talk about issues.
It can be once a day, once a week, once a month or whatever you feel will be able to allow you to get out any issues and made sure that each of you understand other other’s position.
Make sure both parties get a chance to talk in discussions
Sometimes you talk with your spouse, but the talk is one sided. The more assertive person might be doing the other talking and despite numerous “talks,” the less assertive person never gets his or her point across. It is important for both parties in a marriage to speak. Also, while the one is speaking the other should be listening.
It is important that they not merely hear – they should be involved in active listening and really processing what the other is saying. They should each try to be empathetic. You should also be able to speak up if you feel that the other is not listening to you.
Good communication is important in any marriage. Consider the above tips to help you develop healthy communication in your marriage.
