2319 Words: 405
There is no “written in stone” education amount that is needed for all positions as a teacher assistant since every position will have its own requirements. It will depend on the district as well as the particular school and position for which you are applying. Obviously, there is a big difference in applying for a job as a teacher assistant with a college as compared to with an elementary school. There are certain education backgrounds that many schools will look for however. The following is some education commonly needed for jobs as a teacher assistant.
Education in “education”
A lot of schools require that their teacher assistants have education in teaching. They have actual classes on teaching and the best way to portray things to students. You can even get degrees that are in education. A lot of times, this is especially the focus if you are going to be applying for a job as a teacher assistant for a younger child. For the youngest children, you will often know the academics being taught (i.e. most adults can master first grade math at least). For those it is more knowing the best way to teach these first graders, which might be more of the challenge. They may also look for some of these with the older children and even college level as well.
Education in the subjects that you are a teacher assistant for
Especially as you get higher in age and level, the schools are going to be looking for you to have more education in the particular subject. For instance, if you are a teacher assistant for a college level biology class, they are probably going to want to see that you have education in biology. This will be more important as the classes you are the teacher assistant for are more advanced because you will need to know more in order to help teach the students.
Certain degrees
Some schools want the teacher assistant to have a specific degree, but again this will depend on the school and the position that you are applying for. For instance, some colleges only want doctoral students to have this job thus they may require that you have the degrees below that such as a bachelor’s degree.
Different schools will require different things from their teacher assistants, however the above guidelines might give you a basic idea of the education that may be required for you.
