There is no one exact set of requirements as far as experience goes to be a teacher assistant because it will depend on where you are applying and the requirements of that specific district. There are certain types of experience that are often required in this type of job, however. The following is some experience commonly needed to apply for jobs as a teacher assistant.
Obviously, the best type of experience would be experience in the role of a teacher assistant or actual teacher. The closer you can get to having experience in the exact same job, the better (i.e. if you will be teaching high school students, it is best if you were working before with those aged children as opposed to preschoolers). The new job will be most interested if you have had experience that is very comparable. Barring this, the closer you can get the better. Thus if you have not had any experience exactly as a teacher assistant, some places might be okay if you had experience working with kids in general such as if you had experience working with kids in a daycare setting. Other applicants might not have experience in a paying position, but might have had experience in a volunteer position. Others might have had schooling in this area and had worked with kids as part of an internship. This experience can also be very useful when applying for a job as a teacher assistant.
If you are looking to teach in an upper level school, then they might look towards experience in the particular subject area. For instance, if you are going to be teacher assistant for a college level science class, then they are going to look to see what experience you have in science. For instance, if you are looking to help in a chemistry lab and you have had experience doing research before in the same area, this might be something that they would be looking for. The higher the level of academics, the more they might be interested in this core level of experience in the subject. They may also be looking for experience in teaching, tutoring, or being a teacher assistant in that field.
Different jobs will ask for different levels of experience from its applicants. Make sure to inquire exactly what they are looking for before you apply. The above experience requirements are likely to be in place for many of the teacher assistant positions.
