What to Look for When Choosing a Mattress
2754 Words: 510
It is important to choose a good mattress. You will be sleeping on it every night, and how you feel during the day is often dependent on how you sleep at night. You will have many choices when it comes to mattresses, and there is no one that will be right for everyone. The following are things to look for when choosing a mattress.
The size that is right for you
Consider the size carefully. The popular options are twin, full, queen and king. When thinking about the size, think about the size of the room, as well as the difference it will make to sleep in a larger bed. Think about what else you might need the space in the room for. Also, in general you pay more as you get larger, so that might be a consideration as well. Many people have bed frames that accommodate a certain size, so you might have to stick with that.
Soft versus firm
In the past, some people said that you needed to get a firm bed to avoid a bad back. The beds are made much better now, and a soft bed does not necessarily mean back problems. You should try out the mattresses that you are considering by lying down on them for a few minutes. Of course, some people may have backs that bother them because of different types of beds, but it will not just be the soft ones. Most people can enjoy a soft one just fine. If you have one person who likes a soft bed and another who likes a firm bed, there are even mattresses that have both – one on each side.
Quality of the mattress
You want a mattress that is going to be of good quality and will last. It can be very difficult to compare different mattresses. The mattress companies will make a mattress, put different covers on it and ship it to different stores. You may not see any of the same mattresses at two different stores. However, different brands may be better. You can look up reviews and information on the Internet about the different brands. Just because one brand is more expensive does not mean that it is better. Some brands have different issues such as sagging. Try to find one that will hopefully last. You can also ask around to people you know to find out if they recommend a certain one.
There are some things you may not want to look too heavily at. Many will boast big warranties. Read the fine print. These can be very difficult to redeem because they often are very nit-picky. Some of them will void the warranty if even the tiniest little stain mars the mattress. Others will literally come and measure sagging before replacing it. Also, be careful about looking too much about the cover. It might be soft, but you will probably have a sheet over it anyways.
Do your research at places like Consumer Reports, and you will hopefully find the perfect mattress for you.
