(441 Words)
You want day care to be a positive experience for your child. A lot of children are apprehensive about leaving their parents and going into a situation with a lot of other children and an unfamiliar caregiver. There are a number of methods that you can employ in order to prepare your child for day care. These can make a big difference in how well your child acclimates.
First, you should discuss child care with your child in a playful way, according to Baby Zone. Talk about how exciting it is that he or she will have many new friends play with as well as many new toys. You can talk about some of the exciting things that he or she will be doing, such as playing in a new playground or using computers.
Talk about how day care will work. Some children get scared that when you leave them at daycare that you will not be coming back. Explain that this is not the case and that you will always return for them. Talk about how long it will be so they know that you will come back.
Do not just talk to your child – listen to him or her. Let him or her express any anxiety that he or she has over the child care. He or she may have fears that you can alleviate.
You should visit the child care facility before actually leaving your child there by himself or herself. Many child care facilities will allow the parent and child to come and meet the teachers and the other children. Your child may be able to experience some of the activities while you are there so that he or she can get accustomed to it without having to worry about you leaving the first time.
You can also help your child get ready for day care by going to other events where you leave them for short periods of time. For instance, you might go to a library storytime where the child is in the room by himself or herself while you wait outside. The child will become accustomed to being without you in a smaller situation.
You can also tell your child stories, read them books or let them watch television shows that deal with children at childcare.
Some children take time to acclimate, but most children do eventually get accustomed to going to day care. Keep in constant contact with the teachers and your child to make sure that the transition goes smoothly. Make sure to deal with any problems. With the right preparation you’ll increase the chances of a successful transition into day care.
