There are two gems that are commonly touted as the birthstone for the month of March. The most commonly used one that you see designated in most jewelry stores is the aquamarine. A second stone that is sometimes considered a March birthstone is the bloodstone.
Aquamarine
According to the American Gem Society, the term aquamarine comes from two Latin words: aqua, which signifies water, and marina, which signifies the sea. It was thought to provide protection to those who traveled the seas. Some believed that it could help one achieve a safe journey while on the water. Another belief was that it could relax someone and allow them to keep his or her temper cool.
The color of aquamarine is a very pale blue. Sometimes it is so light that it appears almost clear whereas other times the blue is more pronounced. Sometimes it has a greenish tinge to it. The larger the stone, the more intense the color. Most aquamarine comes from Brazil, but it can also originate from Zambia, Nigeria, Madagascar, Pakistan and Mozambique.
This gemstone is commonly sold in jewelry in stores. It is not as expensive as diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires, and you can get extremely clear stones for a reasonable price. It is set in a wide range of jewelry and often sold in birthstone sets, especially near the month of March.
Bloodstone
The bloodstone is also considered a birthstone of March, although less popularly so. It is jasper with a base that is dark green in color. Iron oxide can be seen as bright red dots on the green. This stone has been used for many years, including by ancient Babylonians who used it in seals and amulets. It was once thought of to contain healing powers.
The bloodstone is also known as martyr’s stone. Old stories say that that it originated when the blood of Jesus Christ fell onto jasper underneath the cross. It is typically located in the forms of pebbles in the beds of rivers or within rocks. In modern times, it usually originates from India, Australia and Brazil.
Birthstone jewelry makes a great gift for someone who was born in the month of March. In general, more people wear jewelry with aquamarines as compared to bloodstones.
