(503 Words)
“Are we there yet?”
“How about now?”
When people are not entertained, the ride of a family road trip may seemingly take forever, especially with children. One way to turn a boring car ride into quality time with the family is to play family games. There are a variety of games that use little to no materials but are very enjoyable for all ages.
Travel bingo
Buy a car travel bingo set such as the Regal Travel Auto Bingo Game Card. These bingo sets look like regular bingo cards, however instead of letters or numbers they have pictures of things that you might see while you are driving on a trip. For instance, on the card are items such as a yield sign and tractor. When a person sees one, they mark it. The first person to get a line or fill the card wins. There are several different versions of the game that you can buy commercially or you can make your own bingo cards based on the landmarks that you see as you travel on your particular route.
A to Z game
This game is not only fun, but can be educational for young children working on their letters. Travelers need to go from A to Z by spotting letters. They may see them on signs, license plates, buildings or anywhere else on the road. The first person who makes it through the entire alphabet wins.
Guess what I am thinking?
You can play a game where one traveler thinks of something and the others have to guess what the person is thinking of. The trick is that the others can only ask yes or no questions. For instance, the person might think of a giraffe. Someone might ask questions like is it an animal and does it have spots. The first person to guess it gets a point. You take turns until everyone has had the same amount of times leading the game.
I spy
One person says I spy something “green” that he or she sees. You can substitute “green” for any characteristic. The others have to quickly guess what that item is. You can also try to guess about items that have passed.
Memory game
There are many versions of a memory game you can play. Start with the letter A. The first person has to come up with an animal that begins with that letter. The next person has to say the first person’s animal and then his own. The game continues until someone can’t think of another animal or forgets the animals before him or her. The next person starts with the letter B.
No matter which game you choose, make sure that the driver only participates if it is safe. For instance, the driver should not be scouring license plates looking for particular letters when he or she should be looking at the road. As long as played safely, travel games provide an enjoyable way to pass the time while on a family car trip.
