Potty Training Basics

(422 Words)
Potty training any toddler is a challenge, but it is especially so for a strong-willed toddler. Various strategies increase your chances of efficient, quick and painless potty training. Try different methods to see what works best for your child.
Set up the throne
According to the Mayo Clinic, it is important to create a comfortable setting for your child to use the potty. You can purchase a small potty chair. These come in different varieties, and some offer fun features such as sounds or popular characters. A second option is to get a seat that fits on the chair. Make sure your toddler understands how to use it.
Bribery
It may not sound poetic, but bribery is one of the most effective ways to potty train a toddler. No matter how strong-willed he or she is, he or she probably likes rewards. You give the child a small reward every time that he or she uses the potty. It could be a very small piece of candy such as a single chocolate chip, a single candy corn or a piece of cookie or sweetened cereal. Stickers make great prizes as well, which you could give to them or put on a chart. Some people even use hand stamps. Of course, heap lots of praise on your child every time he or she uses the potty. You can also offer special incentives if your child uses the potty for a period of time such as an entire day.
Make a schedule
When first potty training your child, try to set a schedule. For instance, take him or her every hour. If your strong-willed child argues with you about this time, then you can try several strategies. You can make it a game by saying you are going to the potty first. You can tell him or her she can’t do the activity until she makes three drops.
Use books and videos
There are many books and videos that encourage potty training in toddlers. Many of these feature a popular child’s character such as Elmo. Once Upon a Potty by Alona Frankel is popular. You will find these books at your local library, bookstores and online.
Timing is everything when it comes to potty training, especially with a strong-willed toddler. Sometimes you may have to just take a little break from it to put your child in a better frame of mind if he or she is particularly resistant. With time, effort and the right strategies, you will soon say goodbye to diapers forever.
