How to Avoid Ruining your Diet
You may feel like you are when a neverending quest to lose weight. You diet and diet and diet, and yet the pounds never seem to come off. In actuality, you may be sabotaging your diet without even realizing it. Consider some of the common mistakes that people make that stop them from losing weight.
One common way that people continue to gain weight is by drinking lots of highly caloric beverages. You may pay so much attention to what you eat while on a diet that you do not think about what you drink. This may be especially true because you do not tend to get full from liquid calories.
Many people do not realize how many calories different drinks have. A coffee drink or an ice cream drink from a restaurant can literally have up to 1,000 calories. Sodas and other sugary drinks contain many calories. In addition, you may drink a bottle of soda thinking that it is one serving when in actuality it is two or more.
Many people also sabotage their diets by taking overly large portions. They may not realize the correct serving size. For instance, the serving size of foods like pasta, cereal and rice is much smaller than people actually take. You may only count one portion when actually you are taking three. To fix this, research the serving sizes and make sure to pay attention when you read the ingredients and nutritional information in food.
Many people sabotage their diets because they go out to eat too much. People have no idea how many calories, fat and sodium are in many restaurant meals. You can easily have a restaurant meal that has more than your daily allotment of calories, fat and sodium. Many people mistakenly assume that the meals will have the same amount of calories as similar meals they make at home. The restaurant will often use extra butter, oil, cheese and sauces that add quite a lot of calories. In addition, they tend to give far larger serving sizes that are recommended.
Snacking can also sabotage people’s diets. You may have the “munchies.” You open that big bag of potato chips and before you know it, it’s half gone. To help with this, keep healthy foods readily available to snack on. For instance, you can keep celery sticks, lettuce or carrot sticks, which you can eat a lot of without causing a big dent in your diet.
Another way to sabotage your diet is to eat when you are already full. Stop eating when you feel mostly full.
You may be sabotaging your diet without even realizing it. Keep a food diary so that you are aware of everything that you are eating and drinking, and make sure to keep it updated accurately. With the right knowledge, you will be more successful in your diet.
