Pros and Cons to Carpets

(470 Words)
One of the most popular types of flooring is carpeting. People use them in many rooms of the home, including living rooms, dens and bedrooms. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this type of flooring. Because flooring is not easy or inexpensive to install and remove, homeowners should think long and hard when deciding whether to install this type of flooring.
Advantages
A lot of people like the look of carpeting. It goes well in many types of rooms and can add a very beautiful aspect to the room. You will have as many choices as there are colors of the rainbow. They also come in patterns in many different styles. You can find them to match just about any decor, theme or style. They’re widely available in many different places.
Many people love the feel of carpeting. They like something soft under their feet. They also like that it provides a soft surface for babies and children, especially those who are young and might fall often.
There are other miscellaneous advantages of carpeting. Carpets are relatively inexpensive compared to many other types of flooring; for example, hardwood floors. They can usually be installed in a few hours. Because of their softness, objects may be less likely to break if they fall on them. Carpeting can also help save energy because they provide some insulation. This may also make them more comfortable under your feet.
Disadvantages
Many types of carpeting use chemicals that are not good for you or the planet. There is some controversy over whether this makes them a suitable type of flooring, especially for someone who has young children. Certain types of carpeting are better than others, however. Research the type you’re interested in and decide if this is a factor for you.
It can also be much more difficult to clean carpets. If you spill a drink on it, for instance, you can end up with a stain that is very hard to clean. If you had a different type of flooring, you might simply be able to wipe it up. You will need to vacuum often instead of just being able to quickly sweep the floor. Sometimes a stain simply cannot be removed. You might spend a lot more time cleaning carpeting than taking care of other floors.
Carpets can also be worse for someone who has allergies. If you do not clean them often enough, dust mites can form on the carpet and this can be very aggravating to susceptible individuals. Carpets may also become raggedy or unattractive very quickly compared to some other types of flooring that last longer.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to carpeting. Look at those as well as the characteristics of your home and family when deciding whether this is the right type of flooring for you.
