What to do when Jewelry Breaks while you are out
It is frustrating and upsetting when your jewelry breaks, but especially so if it breaks while you are out and about. The most important thing is to make sure that you get it somewhere safe and do not lose it.
First, if you have lost your jewelry because it is broken, such as if the clasp broke and it fell off, you’ll want to retrace your steps immediately so that you can find your jewelry. Go back exactly where you were and stop at any stores or restaurants that you were in or that were close to where you were. Ask about it and leave your information for them to call you if necessary.
If your jewelry is still on but is broken, do not leave it on. For instance, if the clasp is broken but it is functioning somewhat so that it has not yet fallen off, do not wait for it to break completely and fall off. You are better off taking it home another way than risking that you will lose it.
You want to make sure to fully protect your jewelry if you are bringing it home, especially if it is a delicate piece. You might be able to find a little box somewhere that you can use, or else you could wrap it in a tissue or something that is soft. You might be able to put it in a bag, especially if it is something very small such as a pair of earrings. Make sure that it will be kept securely and is cushioned enough so that it will not break any further.
Keep it somewhere that will be very close to you. If you have very deep pockets and you are sure that it cannot fall out, then you can put it in them. A woman who has a purse may put it in there. Try to find a zippered pocket or somewhere where it is a little more protected. You can also ask someone who is with you to carry it if they are better equipped to do so.
If it is an important piece of jewelry, you may want to go right to a jeweler to fix it. Sometimes when you bring home broken jewelry, you never end up bringing it out to get it fixed and it just remains broken. You can remedy this by getting it repaired right away. Make sure that you have a reputable jeweler to do this.
Take good care of your jewelry by taking the above steps if a piece breaks while you are out.
