Why it is Important for Students to get a Job

Many students get part time jobs in order to earn money, allowing them to pay for education, cars or necessities. There are many more benefits to a part time or summer job, however, than money. In many cases, it can actually enhance a student’s educations, teaching him or her about his or her field of interest while providing valuable experience that can be useful when he or she enters the workforce.
Learning in a classroom is useful, however there is nothing like real experience. A student who wants to be a veterinarian may find it infinitely more valuable to work as an assistant in a vet’s office rather than reading about vet offices and what they do. They can actually see what is happening and the techniques. In many cases, students can get hands-on experience into the field in which they hope to be working in the future. There may be new techniques or technologies that are not yet being taught in the classroom but are in real world situations that you will only see if you get an actual job in the field.
A student who gets a job in the field in which he or she is entering can learn a great deal about the situations he or she may see after graduation. It can be a great supplement to what he or she learned in the classroom. It might also be more interesting and memorable than classroom instruction.
You will have something very valuable to put on your resume if you have job experience in the field. Many entry level workers right out of college do not have any experience in their chosen field. If you do, this can put you at a competitive advantage and make it more likely that you will be the one to get the job. Also, if you do very well, then the place where you have a part time job might actually be a possible place of employment when you are looking for a full time job. For instance, if you are an intern at a computer firm then you might be able to get a job working there full time after school. They will already like you and know what you can do.
It is also useful to have a job and understand the basics of the workforce before going out for a full time job. Whether or not the job is in your field you will get experience working with others and for others, for instance.
There are many different ways that getting a summer or part time job can enhance a student’s education. It is important to find the right part time job because some can be more beneficial than others. Obviously, the closer to the field of study it is, the more useful it will be. If you are at a college, you might want to look for a job within your major. When you are at the job, act motivated and show that you really want to learn. You never know – the part time job may lead to a full time one once you are done with school.
