Tips on Helping your Kid Find a Summer Job

You want your child to get a summer job to earn money and learn about responsibility. Although the leg work should be his or hers, there are steps that you can take in order to help him or her secure a position.
Talk to people you know who may hire him or her
You may know of someone who has need to hire a child of his or her age for the summer. For instance, if you know a manager who works at a supermarket that employs kids of that age, then you can ask if they have any jobs available. Even if they cannot give him or her a job outright, they may be able to let you know how they can apply. Think about anyone who may have need of someone of your child’s age and with his or her skills. It may even be a neighbor who needs a regular babysitter.
Help him or her look for jobs
Many kids do not know the first thing about finding a job. Talk to your child about how they can look for a position. You can discuss how they can go to the mall and try to apply. Talk to them about the types of companies that might hire people their age such as supermarkets or fast food restaurants.
They may also need transportation to and from the places of employment. You can drive them there.
Practice interview skills with them
Even kids going for low level jobs usually have to do an interview. You can help them prepare for it. Tell them the types of questions that they may hear. You can also practice with them doing a mock interview.
You can also help them prepare for interviews in other ways. Talk to them about how they should dress (which will be dependent on the type of job) and how their attitude should be. You can help them pick out an outfit. Talk to them about the things they should say – and more importantly not say – during an interview.
Help your child set up his or her own business
Your child can make his or her own summer position. For instance, they may want to start a little lawn mowing business. You can go with your child to the neighbors asking if anyone has need of such services. You can help your child plan a schedule.
Be there emotionally for your child as they look for a job. Try to make them feel better if they do not get a job right away and motivate them to keep trying. By taking the above steps, you can help your child get the summer job that he or she wants.
