Parenting Teens

(472 Words)
College can open up doors for your children for their entire lives. You want your teenager to understand the importance of such a move. The following tips can help you encourage your child to pursue higher education.
Talk about the importance of going to college
Sometimes the simplest strategy is the most effective. Talk to your teenager about why college is so important. You can actually look up numbers as to the average salaries that people get when they have gone to college and when they have not. You can also talk about the types of jobs for which they will be eligible. You can go on a job website such as www.monster.com and show them the qualifications for the jobs they see themselves in.
You can also talk about your own experiences at college, especially if they were positive. Talk about all of the wonderful things you did such as make new friends at the dorm, go to college sports games and join different groups. You can show photographs to them.
Many teenagers are not exactly in the business of listening to their parents. You may be able to find someone else to talk to them whom they may listen to more about college. For instance, if they have an older friend who is already off at college then they can talk to them about their experience.
Take them to visit colleges
Your child may be very excited to visit a college himself or herself. Many parents take their children on a tour of the different colleges they are considering. Some colleges will offer tours or have an open house weekend.
Many teenagers are into sports. If they are, then you can take them to a sports game. For instance, if they like college football then they may find a real game to be very exciting. They may want to be a part of that.
Encourage them to do their own research into colleges
Your child may not want to listen to anyone but think that he or she knows all of the answers. Encourage them to do their own research into what college can do for them. You can tell them to talk to the advisors at the school.
Offer to help them financially
Some students are reluctant to go to college because of the high price tag. You can pay for their education if it is important to you and you have the means. Some parents will also give their teenagers something if they choose to go such as a car.
It is very important to encourage your child to go to college. You want to do as much as you can so that they get in the mindset that this is the right move for you. The above steps can help you motivate them to go to college.
