How to Protect your Childs Innocence
(513 Words)
As a parent, you are likely concerned with protecting your child’s innocence. There are many facets to this, and you will probably protect them no matter if your child is extremely young or somewhat older. You may use the following tactics.
Strongly consider what you say to your child
Many parents would be shocked to learn that it is actually them who helped teach their children about some things that they should not know. For instance, it is important not to fight with your spouse in front of your kids and bring up inappropriate things. Watch what you say in front of them, even when making jokes.
Keep yourself together
A child whose parent is an alcoholic often loses his or her innocence far too quickly. You are a parent and should act like one. If you have problems with addiction or other issues, then get help so that you can protect your child.
Consider your child’s friends
Many parents whose kids get into trouble will staunchly say “They got in with a bad crowd.” Try to address this issue before it gets to the point that your child does something that is far from innocent such as getting into drugs or breaking the law. Even a good child can get steered in the wrong direction. Many kids want to fit in very badly and they may learn about things or do bad things from those around them just to appear cool. Obviously the younger they are, the more you will be able to influence this, but try to encourage your child to have good friends who will help lead them in the right direction and not introduce unhealthy things into their lives.
Of course you should make sure that you do not introduce anyone unsafe into your child’s life. You should be a parent first.
Keep them away from the news or violent television
It seems as if a child can lose half of their innocence simply by watching the nightly news. A lot of the news programs are very sensational. They may share horrible stories that are truly no one’s business except those directly involved. If your child watches these programs then he or she may learn about a lot of the evils of the world at far too young an age. There are many things about which children simply do not need to know. They may be very upsetting for them.
You should also strongly consider the movies and television shows that they watch. Even cartoons that are rated G often have violence. A lot of kids watch movies that contain sexual elements. Consider what they read as well.
Part of protecting your child’s innocence is making sure that they can come to you to ask about something that they do not understand. You want to be the ones to teach them about the realities of life, not to have them go to their friends because they are uncomfortable with you. You cannot protect your children forever, but the above techniques can help you do the best that you can.
