How to Make Christmas more Meaningful for Child Patients in a Hospital
(542 Words)
It is difficult to watch your child spend Christmas in a hospital. There are small steps that you can take to make the holiday more meaningful for your little one. Try the following ideas.
Santa Claus comes to visit
The hospital may have Santa Claus visit the children in the hospital. If they do not, see if you can get someone to dress up like him and visit. The child may feel brightened to see the jolly man. They can take pictures with him and tell him what they want for Christmas. He can bring a special treat for them.
Of course whether or not Santa Claus comes, you should bring presents for your child from him. You can have the presents “appear” on Christmas morning just like they would at the house.
The spirit of giving
Children often feel good about themselves when they do good for others. Just because your child is in the hospital does not mean that he or she cannot feel the thrill of making others happy. You could have them draw a picture or write a note to someone else. Let them pick out a present on the Internet to send to Toys for Tots. Many major hospitals such as Memorial Hospital in South Florida offer free Internet access. Also, many people can access the Internet on smartphones or through a service for their tablet.
Artificial Tree
You may not be able to fit a full size Christmas tree in the room, however that does not mean that you cannot get a miniature artificial tree that looks like the real thing. They make many versions at sources like Mini Christmas Trees. You can add lights, ornaments and garland just like you would with a regular tree.
You can also decorate the rest of the room with holiday decorations such as wreaths. Make it seem more like a home and less like a hospital room.
Christmas activities
If the child were home, there would be many Christmas activities they would be doing, and many of these can be done even in a hospital. You can purchase different types of Christmas crafts from places like Oriental Trading Company. They can watch Christmas classics on television such as Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. You can read books to them about Christmas. Play Christmas music for them.
Christmas food
If it fits in with the child’s dietary needs, bring some delicious Christmas food for the child. You could make his or her favorite meal. Be sure to check with the physician to find out what he or she can eat.
Visitors
For many, Christmas is about family. If the child is able to receive visitors, bring in as many family members and friends as possible. Seeing how much everyone cares will lift his or her spirits.
Give
Even if you do not have a child in a hospital yourself, you can still make a difference. Various hospitals such as the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey accept donations for items that can make a difference to children.
You can make Christmas more meaningful for your little one, even in a hospital. Most of all, let him or her know how strong your love is and how always be there for them.
