Christmas Theme Lesson Plans for Homeschoolers

(402 Words)
Children can learn much from lesson plans that surround the Christmas holiday. If you teach your child yourself in a homeschool environment, you may want to incorporate some of these lesson plans into your December work. You can choose from a variety of plans based on the age of your child and the lessons you want to impart.
One lesson plan can focus on teaching both about Christmas and the different cultures of the world. You can explain how Christmas is celebrated in Spain, France, Mexico and many different cultures. Easy Fun School provides information on Christmas in these different countries.
The exact activities will depend on the age of the child. Young children may do a craft or art project about Christmas in another country. For instance, in Holland, Santa Claus is known as Sinterklaas and arrives by steamboat in November. The children can draw a picture depicting this. Another idea is to have the children perform a Christmas tradition from another country. For example, in Italy, children dress in red jackets and hats with red tassels and sing. The children can dress that way and sing Italian carols. If you are teaching about home economics and food, then you can have the children cook a Christmas food from another country. They can make Chocolate Caliente, which is a popular recipe in Mexico during Christmas.
You can also use Christmas as an opportunity to teach children about the importance of helping others in the community. You can discuss different ways that people help those less fortunate during Christmastime such as donating to charities like Toys for Tots. Tell the children that even they can make a difference, no matter how young they are. Have them come up with ways that they can help their community. It may be something as simple as drawing pictures to send to a nursing home or military stationed overseas. They may pick out a toy to donate.
You can also use Christmas to talk about history in general. Discuss how Christmas began and how the traditions formed and changed over the years. As you teach these lessons, go over the history of the time period in general. You can let them dress up as people from the past as a hands-on activity.
There are many lessons that you can teach your homeschooler that surround Christmas. Try a variety of different activities to keep the children’s interest.
