There are many great deals to be had at Costco, however that does not mean that it is always a great deal to shop there. In reality, shopping at Costco can be expensive if you are not careful. Pay careful attention to the following factors.
The membership fee
Costco is one of the few stores that charges a fee just to shop there. You must pay the fee yearly in order to purchase anything. A basic gold star membership is $50. You will need to make sure that you make that $50 back in savings before you will receive any additional savings. Some people do not shop that much and will never reach that amount of savings over grocery stores, discount stores and other alternative stores. For them, shopping at Costco will therefore be expensive. If you choose to get the higher level of membership, the executive membership at $100, you will need to get even more savings to make it worthwhile.
Not everything is inexpensive
Although the items at Costco are generally less than at other stores, this is not a universal rule. Some items are indeed higher than similar items at other stores. They also change the prices of items often. You must constantly evaluate the cost so that you do not inadvertently get a bad deal.
Needing to buy in bulk
Many of the products sold at Costco come in bulk. This can be expensive for someone, especially if they cannot use all of it and some of it goes to waste. Even if it is a better per unit cost, you must consider the portion that you use, not that you buy.
Less selection
Costco has large stores but they have many different items in them. Even though they offer clothes, books and food, they do not have the same selection as a full size department store, bookstore or grocery store. You may therefore be forced to buy a more expensive brand because they do not have the lower cost brand that a more specialized but expansive store would offer. It may be a good deal for that particular brand, however if you would have gone with something cheaper at the other store such as a store brand, then you will not see the savings that you desire.
