Leadership Styles you must Avoid
No two managers have the exact same leadership style, and yet a variety of styles can be effective. Certain methods have much less of a likelihood of success, however, and these should be avoided.
The Dictator
Some choose to lead based on fear, much like the dictator of a country. They may think that they have “cowed” all of their employees into following their directions, but oftentimes this is not the case.
If your employees feel that you are a dictator, then they will probably not like you. Some will try everything in their power to get back at you or to not do the work. They may call into sick when they are not ill. It may simply be a case of them working slower than their potential. You cannot control everything. Also, you will lose good employees who will not put up with a tyrannical boss and will look for employment elsewhere.
The Ultimate Friend
Being a friendly boss can have its benefits. When your employees like you, they are more likely to work hard for you and do what you say. However, you will want to be careful about letting this get too far. When people feel their bosses are their friends, they feel like they can get away with whatever they want because their “friend” will not get them into trouble. They may take advantage of the relationship. It is okay to be pleasant, but you should not be their best friend.
The Apathetic Boss
If you do not care, why should your employees? Some managers are not themselves the owners of their companies, and many do not like the jobs themselves. They may be apathetic as to the work performance. Although they usually have the belief that this apathy is well-hidden, it is probably much more apparent than they realize. If your employees see that you do not care about the job or about what they do then they will not care.
Consider a manager at a fast food restaurant as an example. The worker drops a piece of food on the floor in the back. The manager sees it but just ignores it when the worker puts it right back on the plate and serves it. If the workers see and notice this, then they may not see any reason to bother making the food item again. If the boss does not care about the quality of work then they will not.
You will be even more poorly regarded if you are a hypocrite. Bosses need to lead by example. If the boss is the one that drops the food and then puts it back, then all of the employees will learn that this is the correct method.
Managers should not only study successful leadership styles but poor ones as well. Those listed above are some best avoided.
A craft can be a fitting way to celebrate the Royal Wedding. Make certain that the craft is appropriate for the age of the crafter and adjust as needed. One of the above ideas may work well with your children or students.
