The Importance of Succession Planning in the Workplace

(432 Words)
Succession planning is vital for a company. It can help plan for eventualities and allow the business to continue without interruption through changes in staff and economic conditions. There are various components to such planning.
Succession planning refers to having a set idea of who will come after or succeed current management and other workers. It is not just the plan, but the training and preparation of such people so that the transition is seamless. It can also refer to training people to work through changing demands of the market.
In a difficult economy, the needs of the company and its workers are not always the same as in a more positive economy. In these times, it is important for companies to stay ahead of the game and continue to train people for the needs that will be there when the economy picks up. When it does happen, they will be prepared and can take advantage of all that it has to offer. If they instead wait for that time, then opportunities may pass them by as more prepared competitors are ready to change with the times. They will need to waste time training employees.
When a key employee departs a company, havoc can occur. Different people may vie for the position. If the manager did not train others and kept secrets to himself or herself, then no one may be truly prepared to take the reins. In this case, the company can suffer.
Succession planning is so important to a company because it is not always easy to tell when sudden changes will occur. Through a variety of circumstances such as medical emergencies, people need to suddenly leave a company. Other eventualities can occur within and outside of the company. The more that this is anticipated, the better prepared the business can be.
It is important for the succession planning to be comprehensive. The employees who are being groomed for certain positions should see constant progress. Their mistakes should be corrected so that they can learn.
Succession planning is also important to a company because it can help attract and keep excellent personnel. A lot of employees start in a company in a lower position than which they would prefer. They join in the hopes of moving up the “rungs of the ladder.” If this can be apparent in a company, then they may be more likely to stay.
Succession planning is very important for all different types of companies. Businesses should constantly evaluate their strategies to make sure that employees are ready to handle changes that occur.
