Many people suffer from dry skin. Unfortunately, you may be exacerbating it without even realizing it. The following tips can help you care for your dry skin.
Use moisturizers
There are many moisturizers on the market today, and these can help keep the dryness out of your skin. You will want to be careful when selecting the brand and type of moisturizer because for some people certain ones can make it worse. Some people try to stay away from brands with excess ingredients such as fragrances. It is not true that the expensive ones are better for your skin and the cheaper ones worse – there are some basic ingredients like ceramides and lanolin that can help quite a bit. Many of them can be used quite liberally. Especially use them on any dry areas and during times when your skin might be more prone to dry out such as during the winter. You should use it on your skin as soon as you get out of the shower to help retain moisture.
Do not wash yourself too often with soap
Soap can rob skin of moisture. Be careful about how much you wash your hands, for instance. Sometimes you may be able to clean your hands with the use of a hand sanitizer instead of soap. Also, you may not even always need soap.
You should also use soaps that are not as bad for your skin. Many of them have irritating ingredients. They may sound great and tout all of their ingredients but they are just extra things that can irritate your skin. Just because something is natural does not mean that it is good for your skin. You can try plain Dove or Ivory soap for instance. Also be careful about how long you stay in the water. If you take very long showers, then this can exacerbate your condition.
You may not be able to avoid washing your hands constantly. You may have children and always be changing diapers or feeing them, for instance. If this is the case, you could consider wearing gloves so that you do not have to constantly strip your hands of their moisture.
It is also important to keep sunscreen on your skin if you are in the sun to avoid further damage.
If you are having a real problem with dry skin or if it develops into eczema, you can may want to visit a dermatologist. He or she can evaluate your skin and give you helpful ideas to help you care for it.
Dry skin is a common yet frustrating condition. The above tips can help you address this issue.
