There are many distractions that you may have to combat while studying. The more you can resist these, the more likely you will be to have an efficient and effective study session.
E-mail
When people hear “You’ve got mail” or their own e-mail program’s unique indicator, they may feel like they can do no more studying until they find out what it is. The problem is that many people receive numerous e-mails a day and even an hour. You may want to exit your e-mail program if you cannot resist it. If you are waiting for something important such as a correspondence from a study buddy, then you can keep it up, but only answer the specific e-mail for which you are waiting.
The call of the Internet
Many students study while on the computer. You may get the urge to go on to your favorite websites. You may want to look at the news or go shopping. You may go to a social networking website such as Facebook or Twitter. A lot of people check these many times a day, but it is important not to let them distract you from your studying.
Phone ringing
For some people the phone ringing is absolutely irresistible. Unless it is something truly important, you should try to resist it. If you have called ID you can use it to only accept important phone calls. You can also tell people not to call you during those times or even turn off the ringer. You should utilize these same rules for text messages.
Noise
A lot of people are distracted by random noise. This cannot always be helped if you share your living space with someone else, but try to find as quiet a place as possible. You can always go to a library if your home is too loud.
Television
Some people study while the television is on. Although you may think it is in the background, it can often take some of your focus away from studying. You may not absorb as much of the material if part of your brain is wrapped around that soap opera or the football game. You should keep it off. Even the radio can be distracting to a lot of people.
Food/hunger
As best you can, you should eat before you study. If your stomach is growling, then it can be difficult to concentrate on your studies.
Distractions can hamper your studying greatly. Every time you stop, it may take you a while to get started again. The above distractions are some to avoid.
