How to Dress for a Cruise

When you go on a cruise, you may need to bring a variety of clothing with you. Many cruises have a variety of functions and excursions, which require different dress codes. The following are some tips on how to dress for a cruise.
Clothing to wear on the deck
You will need a variety of clothing to wear on the deck of the ship. You may want to bring comfortable shirts and shorts or slacks. Women might like to wear sundresses. You may just want some comfortable loungewear. You will also want to bring a sweater in case it gets chilly. Of course, how heavy the clothing is will depend on the time of the year and the climate in which you will be.
Formal clothing
If you plan on attending the most formal of nights then you will probably need formal clothing. Many cruise ships require a suit or a tuxedo for men. A women may be dressed in a formal gown, dress or suit.
Semi-formal clothing
Some cruises ask that you dress nicely for many dinners, but you are not required to wear something extremely formal. You may want some nice cocktail dresses to wear as a woman.
Bathing suits
Of course most will want to bring some bathing suits to swim in while they are on a cruise. You will usually have opportunities to swim both while on the ship and on excursions. You may want to bring several suits so that you have one if yours gets dirty.
Outerwear
If you are prone to getting cold or if it is during a colder season, you may want to bring some outerwear. No matter what you should probably bring at least a light jacket. You can also bring warmer jackets and pants. A lot of people like to dress in layers as well.
It is also important to think about the shoes you will wear for your cruise. You may be doing a lot of walking while on the ship, and you do not want to get blisters. Make sure that you bring something that is comfortable. You will also want formal shoes to match your nicer outfits.
Many cruise lines will have a list available suggesting the different type of clothing that you should bring with you. You will want to take that into consideration as well as the above tips when packing for your trip.
