It can be very difficult to juggle your family life and college studies effectively. These two important parts of your life may each vie for your attention, but thoughtful techniques can help you manage them.
Make specific, dedicated time for each
Many people have trouble because they are always trying to do two things at once. You may be taking an exam and yet thinking about what you are going to serve your children for dinner. You may be playing a game with your kids and wondering how you did on that exam. As much as possible, try to focus on the item at hand so that you do not feel overwhelmed. You might want to make specific time for each one.
Let go of the guilt
A lot of people who have a family feel guilty for any time they are not spending with them. College is very important, however, and you may be doing it exactly for your family. With college you can get a better job and provide better. It also might just be something important for you to do yourself. Do not let yourself get overwhelmed by guilt. It is okay to do both of these.
Get help if you can
Some people feel like they have to be superheroes, juggling everything without asking for help. This is not always possible. If others offer to help, then take them up on it without feeling guilt. They may feel good that they can provide for you. Splurge on a babysitter or parent’s helper if you need someone to distract the children while you focus on your studies. These two big items sometimes require more than you have to give.
Try to keep organized
You may find it much more difficult to juggle both family life and your college studies effectively if everything in your life is disorganized. When you are disorganized then things may just naturally take longer. If you have to look for your homework or your child’s school backpack, for instance, then that is just time lost. You also do not want to miss things because you forget about them. Keep an organizer so that you know when all of your commitments are.
You also want to be intelligent when you schedule things. Do not plan a huge family party the night before you have a big test. Space things out so that you are less likely to feel overwhelmed.
You may feel pulled in two directions with your family life and college studies. The above tips can help you juggle these two items.
