(426 Words)
Eczema is a difficult condition with which to deal, but there are different measures that can be effective at controlling it. Try the following strategies to combat this uncomfortable skin condition.
Use moisturizers
Many sufferers find that their eczema occurs because their skin is very dry. You may find success using different lotions, creams and ointments in order to avoid dryness in your hands or other areas where you are experiencing the eczema. You will see many different versions of these creams and lotions by brands such as Dove and Vaseline. You might want to try to find some that are very basic. Some have fragrances and other ingredients, which for some people might make their skin irritated. It is especially important to apply lotion after you have washed your hands or body since that is when it might be the most dry.
Use plain soaps
A lot of people use very fancy soaps, but some of the added ingredients in these can be bad for certain people’s skin. Some dermatologists recommend using simple Dove soap.
Limit hand-washing
Many get eczema on their hands because they do an excessive amount of hand-washing. For some people it is a habit, but others might have no choice such as mothers who change diapers or need to cook their children’s food. Try to avoid it as much as possible while still maintaining proper hygiene. You can use hand sanitizers in many instances instead.
Consider wearing gloves if the eczema is on your hands
If you are always washing your hands, then you may want to instead wear gloves so that you do not constantly strip your skin of its moisture.
Medication
Some with this condition feel that they have no choice but to use medication to control their eczema. Cortisone creams and ointments are commonly used for this, and these can be found in both over the counter and prescription strength. These creams can thin the skin and have other consequences, however, so many of them are only meant to be used for a certain amount of time. Be sure to follow all instructions and discuss usage with your doctor.
Although eczema can be frustrating, especially because of its tendency to reoccur, you may be able to control it with the appropriate measures. If you feel that you are having difficulty controlling the condition on your own, then seek the services of a dermatologist who should be able to help you get started to controlling it. One or a combination of the above methods may work for your skin.
