Morning sickness is one of the necessary evils of pregnancy, which a majority of women feel sometime during their nine months. Various strategies can help to control it. Because different measures work differently depending on the person, you may want to try several of the ideas below.
Controlling your food intake
You may be able to help control your morning sickness by what you eat and how you eat it. A lot of pregnant women feel worse if they are hungry. Even if you are used to skipping meals, you should try to avoid doing so now. Some expectant women like to eat small meals constantly throughout the day so that they never feel hungry. Alternatively, you should avoid over stuffing yourself. A lot of people feel nauseous anyways when they gorge themselves, and this experience can be magnified when you are pregnant.
You should also consider what you eat. Certain women cannot tolerate certain foods while pregnant. Look for these trends. Many mothers-to-be find that heavy, fatty and spicy foods can exacerbate morning sickness. They may also find that bland food such as crackers can help to settle their stomachs when they are not feeling well.
Mint
A lot of pregnant women find that mint can help control their morning sickness. You can get this in many forms in different foods.
Motion sickness wristbands
Many pharmacies sell these non-medicated wristbands. Using the power of acupressure, they help some women to feel better. They look like simple cloth bands with a tiny ball that go around your wrists. Usually indicated for motion sickness, they can also work for some women for morning sickness.
Distract yourself
Sometimes a pregnant woman can actually make herself feel physically better or worse with morning sickness by her thoughts. If you focus on how bad you are feeling, then you might notice it more and feel absolutely miserable. Instead you may want to try to get involved in something else. You can watch a very engaging movie or talk to someone who really distracts you. You may find that as your thoughts get turned to these other things that you do not notice it as much.
If your morning sickness is unbearable or if it is affecting you physically (such as if you are vomiting so much that you are not gaining the recommended amount of weight) then you might want to talk to your physician. There are prescription medications that can be helpful in controlling morning sickness when other measures cannot. Otherwise try the above strategies.
