: Crafts for Nursing Homes Popsicle Stick Creations

(427 Words)
There are many great popsicle stick creations that can be done by nursing home residents. The following are some ideas that you might want to consider.
Popsicle stick person
An easy craft is to let the nursing home residents make a popsicle stick person. At the top of the popsicle stick they can draw a little face with a smile, eyes and nose. Alternatively, you can get two little “googly eyes” for them to glue on. You could get some fake hair for them to glue on the top. You can also get little pieces of fabric or construction paper for them to glue as clothes on the “body” of the popsicle stick person. You or they can cut out little dresses, for instance. They can also use markers, crayons, colored pencils, paints or other art tools to decorate it. You could have them embellish them with different materials like glitter, sequins, beads, feathers and so forth. This can be as simplistic or complex as you want depending on the skills of the nursing home residents. They can make one for they can make an entire family. You could then hang them all together on a big poster board or stick them into a long flat piece of Styrofoam to show them “walking about.”
Popsicle stick picture frame
An easy craft is a popsicle stick picture frame. The residents can take different popsicle sticks and make them into a square shape, gluing them at each corner. They can make several layers. They then need something on the back to help hold in a photo. You can just take some sort of thick paper and glue it to the back of the phone frame, attaching it on the bottom and two sides. There should be a slot at the top where they can slide in a picture. At the very top of the picture frame you can glue on a string or loop that they can use to hang it from the wall (you can skip this part if you just figure you will prop it up on something). They can then decorate the popsicle sticks on the front of the picture frame. They can use markers, paints and embellishments like those listed above.
No matter what craft you choose make sure that it is appropriate for the abilities of the residents. Some may not be able to glue and only to color for instance. Others can do more. You want them to enjoy making it and not be frustrated. Consider the ideas above when planning your craft.
