You may spend a lot of money shipping Christmas presents. There are different strategies that you can try in order to save money on this expense.
Buy gifts that are not as heavy
Some people specifically think about how big and heavy the gifts that they buy are if they know that they are going to ship it. You may want to take that into account especially if you are buying a gift that is not that expensive to begin with. You could literally double your cost with the shipping and this can destroy your budget.
Try to ship items together
You will usually spend far less when you ship two items together instead of separately. If a lot of your relatives live near each other, then perhaps you can send all of the gifts to one of them and ask that they distribute them.
Buy on the Internet and look for free shipping deals
Many places offer free shipping on the Internet. You will find this on a variety of items on www.amnazon.com, for instance. Of course, make sure that you do not pay extra for the item, but oftentimes you do not.
Look for less expensive shipping options
When shipping for Christmas, you may want to shop very early so that you can ship at a slower speed. For many different items you will have a range of shipping options such as first class, priority mail, overnight, etc. If you ship earlier then you may be able to ship it on one of these slower speeds and still be sure that it will be there in time for December 25.
You can also look to see if there are lower cost options for what you are shipping. You usually save a lot if you ship a book through media mail, for instance. They also have flat rate boxes that may save you money if you have something that is very heavy. You pay a flat rate for an item that can fit in the box even if it would normally be more because of its weight. Also, there are different businesses that offer shipping such as UPS and FedEx, so you can see if one of those would be cheaper for what you are shipping.
Christmas postage can be very expensive, and many people want to save as much money as they can in 2010. Of course you could also consider hand-delivering items to people that live nearby or whom you are going to see any time in the vicinity of the holiday. Consider the above tips to help you save on this cost.
