If you have less money during Christmas of 2010, then you are not alone. Many people need to save during this time, but you still want to give to others. The following are tips on how to accomplish these conflicting goals.
Give people handmade gifts
You may want to give people truly spectacular gifts but you just do not have the budget that you used to have. Instead you can give them something that is handmade. You can think about your skills. If you like to paint, for instance, then you can paint a picture for them. You can also make a collage with photographs. If you are skilled as a writer, then you can write something for them. Make them a poem or take a journal and write down all of the memories of good times that you have had with them as well as special things that you love about them, what you admire in them, times you loved, etc. Most people would love a gift such as this on Christmas much more than they would love an expensive but impersonal bauble.
Cook for them
A lot of people love homemade food. The ingredients for food are often not too expensive, and you might be able to make them something that is very special for much less than you would normally spend on a present for them. You could make them an entire meal so that they do not need to cook one day. You could make them all different kids of treats such as brownies, cookies, etc. If you are making for a lot of people then you can make a variety of items and then give everyone a sampling.
Do something special for them
Because you do not have a lot of money you could instead offer to do something very special for the person. For instance, if they are a couple with young children and they hardly ever get out on their own then you can offer to watch their children so that they can have a night out. If someone has a big home project such as they need to paint their house, then you can offer to do that for or with them. You can take their car and give it the best wash inside and out. They may like one of these as a gift much better than something material.
Of course some families try something like a white elephant gift exchange because of the difficult economic times. Everyone can get a present, but you only need to buy one. You might want to see if anyone is interested in such a practice.
Even with not a lot of money you can still give to others on Christmas. Try the above ideas.
