Kids love to spend time in the sun. They can enjoy the fresh air on the playground, splash at the beach or just run out and about. The sun can also be dangerous for kids, however. Most people don’t realize that even a few bad burns during childhood can raise a child’s chance of skin cancer. It is therefore important to exercise proper sun safety.
Use sunscreen
You want to have sunscreen on your child any time that they are going to be in the sun. It does not have to be a long time for the sun to start to do damage. Many people put sunscreen on their children every day to cover recess time at school and any other times they might be in the sun. Make sure that you get a high spf. There are many different types of sunscreen, and some of them work better or have more recommended ingredients. Do research to find what is best for your family. Ask your physician about any children under six months since many sunscreens are not recommended for this age. Also make sure to reapply the sunscreen often and follow all directions. Some of them need a little while to take effect.
Limit sun exposure
You want to be careful about how much sun your child spends in the sun. Monitor them closely to make sure that they are not getting red or overheated. If they seem too hot, then remove them to a cool place. Seek medical attention immediately if you think that they are suffering from a problem because of the sun. Anyone, including children, are at risk of sun stroke or sun exhaustion if they get too overheated. You might want to be careful about them being out at the heart of the day. Also, you can use sun protective products such as clothing with an spf rating, hats, sunglasses, etc. You can also protect them with umbrellas. You can try to find places in the shade. Many playgrounds now how covers, and this may be more comfortable and safer for them.
Make sure to keep them hydrated
It is easy for children to get dehydrated when playing in the hot sun. You want to make sure that they have a lot of water to drink on a constant basis.
Practicing good sun safety can prevent a painful sunburn and help minimize your child’s risk of sun cancer, sun exhaustion and sun stroke.
