Best Tips for Conducting Employee Reviews

An employee review is an important way to evaluate your employees to ascertain how they are performing, give them feedback on their work and decide whether to give them a raise, bonus or promotion. Consider the following best tips for conducting these.
Make sure that you have an adequate amount of time
Many supervisors are very busy, however employee reviews are extremely important. You want to make sure that you have enough time to do one and are not rushing. If you do not feel that you will have time during the meeting with the employee, then try to get some work done in advance. For instance, if you are several levels above the employee and the review will include the employee’s immediate superior, then you can meet with this or her superior in advance to get the feedback.
Look at any hard statistics that you have
In many fields, their performance will mostly be based on statistics or hard numbers. For instance, a car salesman is often mainly judged on how many cars he or she sells. There may be additional statistics such as extra services that are sold. Look at any numbers available. Consider other factors that may have affected these. For instance, the economy has influenced how salespeople perform.
Look at how the employee gets along with his or her boss, co-workers and customers or clients
No matter how skilled the employee is at his or her job, an important facet is getting along with people. If he always does his job adequately but is rude to everyone and just make the office a generally unappealing place to be then that can be a problem. If he or she is in a service industry such as a waiter then it is important for him or her to get along well with the customers since that can be the difference between them frequenting the restaurant again and not. You can interview different people but also use your own powers of observation from the past.
Talk to the employee about strengths and possible areas of improvement (if any)
You want to explain everything to the employee from your findings. If they have worked hard, you want to reward them with praise. They should know about areas of improvement because they may not even realize that they are lacking in some areas. Unless there is a big issue, focus on improvement and not on how they are doing poorly. You can also tell them about any ramifications of the review such as a raise, etc.
It is important to do employee reviews in a timely fashion so that employees understand that they are important. Follow the above steps when conducting this process.
