What may start as a temporary seasonal job can end up being a career. You should take advantage of any and all opportunities presented, and you may just end up with a job to last you through retirement.
Of course the first step is to make the decision that you want the seasonal job to last longer. Remember that it may be very different when it is not in the season. Once you have made your choice, it is now time to make yourself as attractive as possible to those at your temporary position. You should work as hard as you can at your job. Try to go that extra distance. If your boss needs a favor from someone such as someone to work the less favorable shift, then volunteer to do it. Stay late if needed and come in early. Try to get along well with your co-workers. You may also want to learn as much about the position as you can, including things that you would need to know if the job lasted beyond the season.
You may want to approach your superiors at the job. Try to find one who is very favorable. Many managers are very busy during this time, so try to find a moment when he or she actually has a minute to talk to you. You may even want to make an appointment. You can then discuss how much you like the position. You can showcase your interest in staying longer than just the season. You can talk about additional skills or characteristics that would make you more suitable for a position. Hopefully he or she will have some interest in keeping you. If there is nothing available now, then you can talk to them about openings that may pop up in the future. Turnover does occur in many seasonal jobs such a retail positions, so even if there is nothing right away, then perhaps something will open up a month or two later and you will be the first in line.
If they do not have anything, then you may want to get a good letter of recommendation from them. They may also be able to recommend you to someone else who might have a position. You can talk to others that you know in similar fields to see if they have anything available. After the temporary position ends, you can look at similar companies. You will now have the experience of the seasonal job, thus you will be much more likely to get a position in this field.
Although a seasonal job is temporary by design, it does not always have to be. The above tips may help you turn a temporary job into a permanent one.
