You can get many great bargains at thrift shops. Of course, you want to maximize your experience at such stores. Heed the following tips:
Bargain, bargain, bargain!
One advantage of thrift shops is that you can often bargain to get the price of the item lower. If this is a place that offers such haggling, then take full advantage of it. Give a reasonable price and do not act like you absolutely cannot leave the store without it.
Inspect each item carefully
You want to be sure to look at what you are getting. Typically the items are not new, so there can be rips or tears or other problems with the clothing. What you see is what you get, so to speak. The person who is tending the thrift shop might not know (or want to share) about any problems that it might have. However, be sure to ask the clerk just in case they do know something.
You also want to take all claims with the proverbial “grain of salt.” You should be especially careful with knock-offs. Many clothing items look like the real thing but then they aren’t. Sometimes they are so good that the seller might have even been duped. If you are looking for something in particular then you can do research beforehand to help you spot fake designer clothing.
Know the return policy
Some thrift shops do have return policies. You should be aware of these or any buying policies. This is especially important if you purchase an item that you cannot try on in the store.
Pay with a credit card to protect yourself
If you trust that the thrift shop is honest and you will not have a problem with stealing numbers, then you can use a credit card to give you some protection. If there is a problem with the item then you can challenge it on the card.
Shop around to get an idea of prices
Just because it is a thrift shop does not automatically mean that it has great prices. Some are pricier than others and some are downright expensive. You should try to get an idea of their prices (after bargaining) and shop at a better priced thrift shop.
A thrift shop can provide you with great clothing at a fraction of the price that you would pay at a traditional store. The above tips can help you when navigating such shops.
