Look for scholarships you might be available for
There is sometimes financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants and loans specifically for students studying abroad. You should look to see what is available because these can often save you a great deal of money. You can go to your school financial aid office or through the office that is arranging your travels.
Contact your credit and debit cards to learn about policies
Different credit cards have different policies on using your card in a foreign destination. Oftentimes you need to call them at least to let them know that you will be going away. This may also affect you if you have a card under someone else’s account like your parents. Also, if you are using an ATM card, realize that you mind end up paying fees every time you use it, potentially from your own bank and the foreign bank. They may have a foreign bank that is associated with them that you can use without fees.
Keep your money safe
Foreigners are often the target of criminals. You will want to be very careful about keeping your money safe. Think about how much cash you want to keep on hand. There are different wallets that you can purchase meant to go under clothing or around your arm or in other areas that are more hidden. Do not flash or talk about money.
Carefully budget your money
You will be on your own out there and you want to make sure that you do not overspend. Consider when you buy something that you will need to ship it or somehow get it back with you. It may be very expensive to bring a lot back when you return home. Also, take advantage of any student discounts available.
There are many special financial considerations to think about when you are a student traveling abroad. The above tips can help get you started.
