It is important that the children learn about the rainforests and their importance to the Earth. One way to get the children involved in this theme is to have them make an art project about it. Consider the following fun ideas.
Make a rain stick
What is more related to a rainforest than rain? The children can make their own rain stick by first getting a large bamboo stick with one end that is hollow. You should get all different types and sizes of dry beans. The children can then put these beans into the rain stick. It should not be completely full because it needs to have room to fall to make it sound like rain. They can then plug up the other end with putty or just with a lot of tape. They can decorate the outside of the stick with paints. They can draw animals, flowers or whatever else they like. They can then turn it upside down to hear the sounds you might hear in a rainforest.
Animal mask
There are many different animals found in the rainforests, and the children can pretend to be one with their very own mask. You or the children can cut out an oval shaped piece of paper (using a little thicker paper might work better). Take a rubber band and cut it. Attach each end to either side of the back of the mask so that it will stay on the children’s face. Cut out holes for the eyes, nose and mouth. You can then let the children use their imagination to create a monkey mask or a mask of any animal they might see in the rainforest.
Artwork of all of the different animals and plant life in the rainforest
If you have taught the children about the different types of plants and animals they will see, then you can have them draw some of these. They can use crayons or markers or they can paint it with watercolor, oil or whatever other art supplies you want. They can also add embellishments like sequins or rhinestones. You can also give them different colored construction paper and let them cut out shapes such as the shape of a plant to glue onto their picture. They can also make the same scene onto a piece of apparel like a shirt or a hat or onto something wooden like a picture frame or box. Just make sure that the art materials are made for whatever surface you are using.
A rainforest related art project can be a lot of fun for the children, especially since so many kids like animals. Try the above ideas with your class.
