: How to Reduce Spam in your Inbox

Spam is a problem that many people have to deal with in today’s computerized world. Some of it may be unavoidable, but there are a lot of ways that you can reduce it. Consider the following tactics.
Be careful about whom you give your e-mail address to
When you give out your e-mail address to a website or to a shopping source, you may be giving it out to a lot more people than you realize. These lists are often sold to third-party vendors. Sometimes a lot of people find these lists and your name could just go from one to the next until you are receiving a lot of different spam letters. You may want to consider having a special e-mail for this so that if you have to give it out, all of the spam will not come to your main e-mail box. Also, many places will not do anything if you do not give your email address to them, so if you see no reason to share it, then don’t.
Take advantage of spam filters
A lot of e-mail services like hotmail now offer spam filters. You can use these to cut down on the number of spam messages that you get. You can often designate a specific e-mail or sender as spam and it will delete all messages from that sender in the future.
Consider an email account with better spam protection
Some e-mail accounts are better than others at protecting you against spam. If you really have a problem in your current account, you consider switching to another service that might be better at protecting you.
Unsubscribe from lists (if you know that it is legitimate)
In many cases, e-mails that you would consider spam come from mailing lists that you have been subscribed to. You may be able to unsubscribe. You have to be careful with this, however. If they come from an unscrupulous source they may use your “unsubscribing” to prove that you are getting their e-mails and they may send you even more.
Opt out of sharing your e-mail
Oftentimes when you sign up for something and give your e-mail you can opt out of allowing them to share your e-mail with others. Sometimes it is a box that you can check or uncheck and sometimes you have to contact them afterwards.
Spam is not great, but you can reduce it to a great extent. Some e-mail programs will let you only accept e-mail from pre-approved addresses and this can get rid of it altogether (although limit who you get e-mail from). If you do not want to do something that drastic, consider the above tactics to lessen this problem.
