(431 Words)
Ammonia is an extremely strong and toxic chemical used in many cleaners. If you do not use it correctly, it can be dangerous and even fatal. It can affect the skin, ears, lungs and more.
First, it is vital to follow the directions exactly on the cleaner. In some cases, you only need a very small amount or you must dilute it. Follow directions on the cleaner as to where it needs to be stored.
Ammonia can irritate the skin. It can case burns, pain and irritation, according to the State Compensation Insurance Fund. You should wear protective clothing so that it does not touch your skin at all. You may choose to wear long sleeve shirts and long pants. You can wear rubber gloves to protect your hands where you might actually touch the cleaner. If you do get some on your hands or another body part, wash it off right away.
Ammonia can be irritating to some people’s lungs. Some people with asthma may choose not to use it because of this. In any case, you should make sure to use it only in a well-ventilated area. Open all of the windows in the area and keep the doors open. You can also use a fan to increase air circulation. Choose another cleaner if you have to be in a very small space that does not have ventilation. If it bothers you at all, then stop using it immediately.
It is extremely important not to mix ammonia-based products with other chemicals, especially those that contain chlorine such as bleach. This makes chlorine gas, a highly toxic gas that can cause sickness and even death. First symptoms often include dizziness and white spots; thus, if you experience any of those, stop using the product and get away immediately. In addition, ammonia should not be combined with silver, mercury, iodine salts or halogens because this can cause an explosion.
Some people find that the ammonia bothers their eyes. If this is the case, you can wear goggles, but for most it is probably not necessary.
When you have finished cleaning, wash your hands to make sure there is no ammonia residue. Do not keep it near food items, and of course never put it near your mouth since it can be fatal if swallowed.
The most important thing is to follow all directions and stop if you do not feel well at all. There are many other choices in cleaners that are not as strong; thus, you can change to one of those if you do not feel comfortable using ammonia.
